Q: How much does it cost to homeschool? PDF Print E-mail
A: That depends. If you use a packaged curriculum, it can get fairly expensive - around $800 - $1600 / yr. For some, it is worth the expense. All the work is planned out in a very organized manner, some have a contact teacher to help you along. For other families, a few notebooks, a folder or two, a workbook or two and frequent trips to the library are all it takes - $100 or less
Q: Does anyone have used books I can review or even buy? Is there an annual bookswap? PDF Print E-mail
A: The Queens/Brooklyn Chapter Leader of LIGHT has plans to organize a bookswap at LIGHT's annual "Back-to-No-School Picnic" and possibly a second one are LIGHT's annual "End of No-School Picnic". During the between months, some members offer up swaps at their house or a community gathering room.
Q: I hear the paperwork is overwhelming in NY, can you help? PDF Print E-mail
A: Yes, it can be daunting for a newcomer!  You are the one that knows your child best and must fill out the paperwork, but most of us have systemized it to be painless.

If you need pointers, joining a support group can be helpful. New York Home Education Network offers a great listserv for homeschool support, especially in regards to regulations and paperwork. You can find them here http://nyhen.org/lists.htm

Second, if you live in the Long Island area you can join the LIGHT network group to meet people in your area. Send an email to and be sure to include your name, phone number and town. A LIGHT member will contact you.
